3 Tips to Keeping Your Toddler Motivated About Dance Class

Keeping your toddler motivated about dance can be more of a task than you’d expect!

So, your toddler loves to dance and he/she dances around like no one’s watching at home.  Naturally you decide to enrol them in to dance class but when you’re at the studio your little one is shy, won’t let go of you and doesn’t want to join in the class. So what do you do? First of all, don’t worry, it’s natural! Toddlers are tiny little humans who are learning to deal with new emotions and situations – sometimes they just need a little guidance and understanding.

To help you help your child enjoy the magic of dance, we have put together a few simple tips.

1. Get hold of the teacher’s playlist of songs and play some of the songs at home or in the car on the way to class.

Many young children enjoy familiarity so don’t hesitate to ask the teacher what some of the songs are that they use in the dance class and play them for your child. If they have heard it at home or in the car (a familiar environment) then they will associate the song with a feeling of safety. This way your child can also practice what they learnt in class which helps them feel more involved when they return to the next class.

2. Ask the teacher for moves you can help your child practice.

The teacher will most likely be over the moon to show you a few things you can go over with your tiny dancer. Some movements or steps might seem a little daunting for your child so practicing them with you at home will create a sense of confidence for them. Again, this links back to familiarity. When the teacher demonstrates the step or move, your child will recognise it as something they remember doing with you which will spark confidence and self-assuredness. A bonus side to this is creating good habits and characteristics in your child.

3. Show them some dance inspiration the night before or the morning of class.

When I was young all I did was read dance books, look up dance videos and ponder over dance pictures – which I strongly believe helped me keep my passion for dance alive. I’m not saying you need to overload your child with dance inspiration but a dance movie (such as Ballerina) or showing them some YouTube videos of dancing the day before, or the day of class, will do wonders! Kids are constantly learning so sometimes they get distracted and forget that dance class is a fun activity that they love doing. Inspiring them with some dance footage will surely help them feeling excited for dance again!

The most important thing to do is to not give up. Keep persevering by coming to class and giving your child the option each week. They will learn to not give up so long as you be that example for them.
